Audience Member Tommy Kirk was signed to a four-picture deal with Executive Pictures Corporation and "Catalina Caper" was the first picture of that deal. Kirk subsequently did not make any further films with Executive Pictures, which should be an indication as to the quality and financial success of "Catalina Caper." A group of teens, led by Kirk, find themselves sucked into international intrigue over a forged and stolen scroll. The film is a bizarre hybrid of a Beach Party and Flint comic spy picture, but lacks the fun of either of those films. The Beach Party films were not exactly big budget musicals, but those films look like lavish MGM musical productions in comparison to the bottom of the barrel production values of "Catalina Caper." Outside of a few catchy musical numbers from surf bands you've never heard of, there's nothing to make this film worth watching. It wasn't even all that enjoyable on a camp level. Go ahead and skip this one. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen in my life. Even Tommy Kirk couldn't keep it alive. The film falls flat on its face after the first 15 minutes. The comedy is forced. The suspense isn't even there. Even the story doesn't make any sense at all. An ancient scroll is stolen from a museum, and what does this movie focus on the most? Boobies and butts. It can't stay focused. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review joe m Awful beach party flick with some subplot about a scroll leading to a treasure - I think. Even the crew from MST3K couldn't save this stinker. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member As the new MST3K Netflix original was being promoted I decided to expose myself to some of the old episodes available for streaming on Hulu and Netflix (there is a different random selection on each platform). Whether it is Joel or Mike watching these awful movies with the bots I do not envy the torture they are put through. Their snarky comments add some entertainment value, but my ratings are based on the movie's quality itself and not the extra material broadcast from the satellite of love. The boys love to skewer Tommy Kirk especially in his post-Disney contracts when he was past 20 years old, but still playing teenagers. The swingin' 60s teen movies that flooded the market following the success of the Beach Blanket musicals were mostly soggy. Tries to capitalize on a trend without anything original or exciting to hold your attention. The caper part about an art gallery scroll that may lead to a treasure is ridiculous.
