Audience Member This film was so raw in exposing the inadequate housing provision and legislation when a family's life takes a downward spiral deeper into homelessness in the 1960-70s. The film was discussed in Parliament; and charities such as Crisis and Shelter were formed in the UK to protect the rights of the homeless. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Way ahead of its time. Shot documentary style. The most disturbing thing about it is that, some 50 years later social housing has still not been resolved and is still in crisis. Heartbreaking stuff. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Unfortunately as relevant today as it was then. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A Ken Loach made for TV drama from his earliest days behind the camera, it's a sobering thought that but for a few period details this is as relevant today as it was in 1966. Its documentary feel had such an impact in the UK that people on the street were pressing money into the hands of the actress who played the title character for years after it was broadcast. Also features the narrator of Mr Benn and King Rollo, the mighty Ray Brooks. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member (This is a 1966 film rather than the date given here). Ken Loach has shown the hopeless fate that homeless families faced in the 1960s, but also shows that some things never change, for instance the way that immigrants are blamed for housing problems. There are a few weak moments in the film, but the emotion and injustice of the rest of it outweighs them. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A brutal and very hard to watch film that achieved what most can only hope to, an influence on lives and culture that still stands today (the charity Shelter was set up as a result).
