Peyton Robinson RogerEbert.com With less textbook dedication to its metaphors and more sleight of hand in its structure, “Cellar Door” would accomplish the tension it intends, but its bland approach fails to inspire investment. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Vaughn Stein’s thriller is too simplistic and implausible to provide any chills. But despite some lurid eventual plot elements, it’s also too blandly slick in a TV-movie mode to offer much trashy fun. Oct 31, 2024 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk has an absolute howler of a premise that just … almost … works. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 27, 2024 Full Review Rudy Valdez Willamette Week Cellar Door might not have passed final inspection without its ending. Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Inane psychological thriller. Rated: C Nov 14, 2024 Full Review Ruben Peralta Rigaud Cocalecas Despite the flaws in its narrative, the film remains entertaining and visually captivating, thanks to the talent of its cast and Stein's direction, who knows how to build disturbing atmospheres. Starbroker R "Cellar Door": A Reflection on Secrets and the Corruption of the Soul Cellar Door, starring Laurence Fishburne, transcends conventional suspense by delving into profound moral and psychological questions. Keeping a secret is already a challenge, but the film presents something even more unsettling: the act of agreeing to protect an unknown secret. This is no simple task; it is an act of submission, a surrender of ethics, regardless of the gravity of what lies hidden. Fishburne's character embodies a force almost demonic in nature, offering an exchange that surpasses the material. He does not merely sell a house; he purchases a soul already fractured by loss, one willing to disregard any moral boundary in exchange for security and comfort. This dynamic reflects what might be called "conceptual materialism" — an attachment not to the object itself, but to the idea of stability. Critics who dismissed the film as "simplistic" or "implausible" failed to perceive this deeper layer. Cellar Door is a potent metaphor for the corruption of the soul and the lengths to which we are willing to go in moments of desperation. It is not merely a thriller, but a provocation: how far would we go to obtain what we desire, without questioning the cost? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Audience Member Not a great movie. Pretty interesting drama to be honest, but the movie and concept was hard to believe. The acting and actors definitely helped, but this was not worth the watch, especially with the massive cliffhanger. Don’t watch it if you want to know what’s in the cellar. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Charlene B We enjoyed the 🎥 Entertaining and don’t let the 24% fool you! It’s way better than that! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Jerod S The premise that they can have the mansion as long as they don't open the cellar door is simplistic but oddly intriguing. It's not a feat of film, but it's a twisty fun watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Blakely W The definition of a nothing movie that should be played in the background whole you look at your phone. The titular Cellar Door is more of a red herring than any meaningful plot device.
