Peyton Robinson RogerEbert.com With less textbook dedication to its metaphors and more sleight of hand in its structure, “Cellar Door” would accomplish the tension it intends, but its bland approach fails to inspire investment. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Vaughn Stein’s thriller is too simplistic and implausible to provide any chills. But despite some lurid eventual plot elements, it’s also too blandly slick in a TV-movie mode to offer much trashy fun. Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media What starts out as a provocative idea for a movie soon turns into a soggy soap opera, focusing on ill-behaved characters and loosening its suspenseful grip to the point of nothingness. James M So very dull, cast with stupid, boring characters. A continuous series of cliches with lazy, improbable dialog and behaviors. I suppose the idea was to build suspense, but it had the opposite effect. Try as I might, I lost interest in the story by the halfway point, and bailed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Claudio C Intriguing Thriller, but Left to the Viewer’s Imagination (11,610 – 12 Apr 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In Portland, the mathematician Sera (Jordana Brewster) and the architect John (Scott Speedman) are happily married and anxiously waiting for their first baby. However, one day Sera has a miscarriage, and they become depressed. They decide to leave the city and move to the suburbs to have a new start. But the houses are above their budget or derelict, needing renovation. The realtor Jeannie (Susannah Mars) suggests they talk to her friend Emmett Claymore (Laurence Fishburne), who lives in the neighborhood, and may help them. Emmett welcomes them at his mansion, and they have a great night. He invites them to spend the night in the guest room since they have drunk a lot, and Sera and John accept the invitation. On the next morning, Emmett vanished and left a letter saying that if they want, they may have his house provided they never open the cellar door. John is reluctant to accept the deal, but Sera forces him to sign the papers. They give a party to their friends and John’s old love affair Alyssa (Addison Timlin) comes with another co-worker. Out of the blue, a stranger arrives at the garden with gasoline to burn the house down to the ashes before it is too late. Soon John is haunted by his past when Alyssa files a sexual harassment claim against him, and he is suspended by the company for investigation. John does not tell Sera and pretends he is working. Until the day Alysson comes to the house to talk to Sera and disappears later. “Cellar Door” (2024) is an intriguing thriller but left to the viewer’s imagination. Sera and John change their life and relationship to keep the house for them. The mysterious cellar is never opened and what is inside is left to the deduction of the viewer with an ambiguous ending. I believe that inside the cellar are the bodies of Emmett’s wife and daughter and Allison will join them in the future. The movie brings also a discussion of how far a person may go to keep the possession of a valuable house. Fans of supernatural may believe there is a mysterious curse in the house, but I do not think this is the case. My vote is seven. Title (Brazil): “A Porta do Porão” (“The Cellar Door”) Visit my Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Ashley R My personally take was a great film.. one absolute jigsaw of a film where the pieces very slowly come together. My only few critical comments is towards end it made sense a little soon. Would have to see more of Laurence Fishburn. However best watch of the year for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Chris B Very original. It is a good mystery with a well shot film. The twist near the end is more like a lifetime movie of the week than a great horror movie . Enjoy it but don't love it . Cast and writer did well with material and in lesser hand would have been a one star movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review D P I'm giving this movie extra points for making me guess the wrong culprit. But this is what low budget entertainment is supposed to be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Pradeep V Watch without expectations. Reminds of a cellar door in everyone's lifes that dare not be opened, 'cause people are never ready to see what's in there. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
