Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org Chaperone is not an easy watch and it does not shy away from the often uncomfortable ethical terrain its storyline demands it explore, but it is also thoughtful and humane. Jan 22, 2024 Full Review Simon Foster Screen-Space Akaha’s warm, engaging performance is the perfect foil for Misha’s darker, damaged personality, and all the more tragic for the impact it has on the innocents around her. Rated: 4/5 Sep 13, 2025 Full Review Sankeerthna Vedamtam MovieJawn The joy in the end is debating the moral ambiguities, and Chaperone provides opportunities for that in spades. Sep 11, 2025 Full Review Zach Youngs InSession Film Chaperone is like a long cringe at a situation, but as it goes on you realize that that cringe is because we think that’s how we’re supposed to react. Eisenberg...give us a more nuanced approach that’s worthy of contemplation, discussion, and praise. Rated: B Sep 10, 2025 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest “Chaperone” feels uniquely contemporary when it captures mid-twenties malaise so acutely, but also knows when to lean into a tried-and-true formula for entertainment’s sake when a couple might be right for one another in every way except for their age. Oct 6, 2024 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online Rather than screwball comedy or anguished melodrama, the film allows its narrative to unfold in [a] languid, unfussy manner... It’s a lovely portrait of a particular milieu. Jan 28, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael P Every cast member is a joy to watch perform, the cinematography is excellent, and the pacing is like taking a quick jog. The subject matter is tough on the brain, the silent metaphors are hard to see. This film is one you have to watch at least two times to be sure you've caught the subtle nuance that lurks behind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Crissy K I was lucky to see Chaperone in our local historic theater which was an ideal setting for this beautiful film that was shot here on the Big Island. This movie had so many more layers than I'm used to in a movie, and I can't wait to rewatch it so I can explore some of the the recurring themes in the movie, especially the sound. The music and background sounds brought an eerie and sometimes manic feeling which, although uncomfortable, fit the scenes perfectly. I know that Chaperone "Is Not A Love Story," but I really loved it and hope to see more from Zoe Eisenberg's brain. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/25 Full Review Robin L Beautiful. That is the word that came to mind throughout my viewing of this film. Yes the main characters are physically beautiful but it is what is shown from behind their eyes that is so compelling. Both leads give such nuanced performances depicting a greater maturity than expected, and all filmed against a backdrop of gorgeous Hawaiian scenery. Their relationship develops organically so that it is entirely believable despite the great age differences. Mitzi Akaha immediately draws you in but then holds your interest throughout the film. The long pauses on her expressions are not gratuitous; rather, they are completely informative of where her path diverges from that of her peers. She does not reject out of hand the possibilities and so is willing to question why others don’t understand her life choices. I dreaded the expected undoing of their passionate affair, and yet I fully understood the messages of the film: that long held beliefs in what is expected or acceptable may no longer be viable, and maybe it is not for us to judge why a person seeks a certain life for themselves. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Kapena L Loved everything from the story to the beautiful shots of the quaint town of Hilo. I went in knowing literally nothing about the film beforehand and it didn’t take long until I was laughing, cringing, and cursing at the characters with a full room of an equally engaged audience. I took a friend on my second viewing and his reactions were enough to make it just as enjoyable as the first time. I think he spoke for us all when he blurted out mid-scene: “Oh hell naw, this b*tch!” Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Michael M A well written story with exceptional acting that was produced and directed around a young women’s life in the beautiful town of Hilo in Hawaii. The storyline is thought provoking and makes you realize the consequences of the decisions that you make and the impact that it has on your family, friends and loved ones. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Jana Kealoha P “Chaperone” is dark, hot, and hard to look away from. Watching it, I felt that mix of shame and empathy that only comes from seeing a character make poor choices that you can nevertheless relate to. The Hilo, Hawai'i setting gives it this lush, sticky tension... you can feel the rain and regret in every scene. It’s the rare kind of film that lets women be complicated without apologizing for it.
