      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Chaplin boasts a terrific performance from Robert Downey, Jr. in the title role, but it isn't enough to overcome a formulaic biopic that pales in comparison to its subject's classic films. Read critic reviews

High production values are the star in this tiniest of peeks at the life of Charlie Chaplin, really no more than a recitation of his greatest hits with slight asides given to his actual history. Robert Downey shoulders the proceedings gamely as a reporter (Anthony Hopkins) lightly questions some few life choices Chaplin made - specifically the youth of his romantic conquests (given slight cause by a missed youthful romance). But for the effort behind this postcard from the silent era, this is made-for-TV grade stuff, given gloss by the star cast, only worthwhile as the subject matter is greater than the presentation.

A stupendous biopic centered on the life of the perfectionist genius obsessed with his work that was Charles Chaplin, and it boasts a spectacular production design, a marvelous script, a beautiful score and Robert Downey Jr. in one of his most amazing performances.

The film may be a series of broad brush strokes of Chaplin's life but as an introduction to the man and his work this is a great place to start. The whole thing is held together by a brilliant performance from Downey Jnr, playing Chaplin convincingly at different stages of his life. I don't think this was recognised enough at the time and although he was nominated for an Oscar I feel there's a strong case for him winning it. As Chaplin gets older more make-up is applied to Downey Jnr but even under all that he still convinces as the character. You only have to look at a film like 'J Edgar' to see how difficult it is to maintain a realistic performance under a lot of make-up (they didn't achieve it) and all I can think of is that Downey Jnr suffered from the poor plotting of the film. However that shouldn't have taken away from his achievement in the role. Downey Jnr is supported by a starry cast and the period feel is brilliantly recreated by Attenborough. Top that off with a moving score by John Barry and you have a film I will enjoy returning to again and again.
