Mark R Incredibly moving documentary. It absolutely confirms how accurate "The Wire" was but these were not actors. These were real people facing real tragedies in their very real lives. I cried at the beauty of the people in this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/19 Full Review Audience Member Saw it in an early screening. Amazing film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Very few documentaries distill such complex issues as eloquently as CHARM CITY does. It is easily one of the year's best documentaries. Leah Pickett Chicago Reader Filmmaker Marilyn Ness gains extraordinary access to her subjects and apparently their trust. Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Even when the epidemic of violence touches a beloved character, Ness' careful quilting of compassion and action across her years of filming suggests a fight that won't diminish for these citizens. Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The film captures up close the way violence transforms neighborhoods and families with an immediacy that transcends headlines or sensationalism. Oct 16, 2018 Full Review David Zurawik Baltimore Sun Charm City is not only a superb and moving work of non-fiction filmmaking, it is also one of those socially conscious and totally righteous documentaries with the power to help spur reform. Apr 22, 2019 Full Review Phil Guie Film-Forward.com By the end, there's no easy answer for Baltimore's problems. Yet by focusing on real people who are trying to make a difference, Charm City humanizes the city. Rated: 5/5 Mar 25, 2019 Full Review Andrea Thompson Cultured Vultures Marilyn Ness, who was a producer for the film Cameraperson, takes a fly-on-the-wall approach, but detached she is not.
