Critics Consensus

Cheaper by the Dozen adds some modern twists to its oft-adapted story, but fresh laughs are few and far between.

A big family is a strong comic premise, and Lerner takes a buoyant, energetic approach. Go to Full Review

It’s kinda like a movie. Kinda like a sitcom. Not really either. But its sweet emotions and modern sensibilities eventually make it endearing. Go to Full Review

Its tone wavers even more haphazardly from kids flick to marriage portrait to slapstick comedy to stark commentary on race, without nailing any particularly well and despite endearing commitment from its performers. Go to Full Review

Cheaper by the Dozen is one big missed opportunity. Braff and Union are great together, but the movie wants to do too much, with too little, hindering every good opportunity it has for something awfully familiar and too predictable for its own good. Go to Full Review
Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome 07/25/2023
In this rare instance, Cheaper By the Dozen needs more time. Whether that means a longer screenplay or a change of format to a television series, there were enough interesting concepts at play to warrant more time. Go to Full Review

Directo Gail Lerner and Barris speak the same language so the direction is tight despite some tone and thematic issues. Go to Full Review

Veronica S Mar 18 I love all takes on the Cheaper by the dozen movies especially loved the first in 1950. I think this one is more like the original 1950 version. Plus it has Gabrielle Union & Zac Braff cute couple with great acting abilities! Hope they have another project together again soon, with one of their production companies involved. See more Manuel Rey A 11/12/2024 It's not a bad film. I think it's trying to make the story of blended families a little more culturally relevant. See more Ed R @JustcallmeER 10/26/2024 I wish I could provide 0 stars for this film. There was no need for a remake. It was beyond cheesy and way too woke. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 01/06/2024 The Cheaper by the Dozen remake starring Gabrielle Union arrives with the charm and lighthearted energy one would expect from a modern family comedy, but it struggles to capture the distinct magic that made the original film so enduring. While the updated version has its sweet moments and a few genuinely heartfelt beats, it doesn’t carry the same cohesive spark or emotional impact. Instead, it feels like a reimagining that understands the broad strokes of the story but loses the finer details that once made it resonate. Union delivers a warm and engaging performance, grounding the film with her natural charisma and effortless screen presence. She brings sincerity to the role and creates several touching moments that highlight the joys and frustrations of parenting within a blended, bustling household. Her commitment to the material helps elevate scenes that might otherwise fall flat, offering glimpses of the movie it could have been with stronger narrative structure. The screenplay, however, is where the film falters most. The story shifts directions multiple times, creating a sense of inconsistency that leaves character arcs underdeveloped. Unlike the original, which allowed audiences to connect deeply with each child and understand their personalities, this version feels overcrowded and unfocused. Several of the kids come across more like background figures than integral parts of the family, weakening the emotional dynamic that is meant to drive the entire film. The director clearly had a vision for where the story should go, and there are moments where that intent shines through. Unfortunately, the execution often falls short. The film leans toward a scattered, stop-and-start rhythm rather than providing a fully realized narrative. Instead of feeling like a unified family journey, the plot jumps between comedic beats, social commentary, and heartfelt scenes without finding a natural balance. There are still worthwhile elements throughout. The cast shows genuine chemistry, and some scenes capture the warmth, chaos, and humor that define a large family. The film also attempts to modernize certain themes and dynamics in thoughtful ways, though these ideas don’t always receive the exploration they deserve. At times, it feels as though the filmmakers wanted to tackle too many angles at once, leaving several storylines only partially formed. By the end, the remake leaves the impression of a film with tremendous potential that never fully crystalizes. There’s heart in the performances and promise in the premise, but the lack of narrative focus prevents it from standing alongside its predecessors. With more refinement and a clearer direction, this could have been a meaningful and memorable update. As it stands, it’s a pleasant but ultimately underdeveloped family comedy that leaves you wishing for the depth and cohesion of the original. See more Kyle M 10/15/2023 Predictably inferior, cheesier and characterized as unmemorable while also rehashing the similarly blended veins in "Yours, Mine & Ours", a decent remake nonetheless that still functions as family fun entertainment with charismatic laughs and more topical discourses, concluding with the same message after its own discourse should be taken metaphorically. Each of these films should be taken as generational expressing how big families can get and what related challenging obstacles should they overcome, thus the possible purpose of delivering this kind of scope as a picture that hasn't been taken for some time. (B) See more Blitzford M 10/14/2023 Absolutely terrible. Worst remake in the history of the movies. In a time when people want to go to the movies to Forget About Reality, they had to shove every political narrative down your throat in what is supposed to be a "Family Movie". They tried to remake A classic... And Failed Miserably. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anybody. See more Read all reviews
