Critics Consensus

Chef Flynn might have cut a little deeper into its subject's story, but this entertaining overview of a precocious talent's rise to acclaim still has enough flavor to satisfy.

Brad Wheeler Globe and Mail The film doesn't quite come together. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 25, 2019 Full Review Steve Davis Austin Chronicle Just wait for the grainy color film of the toddler version of the movie's titular chef blithely playing on the floor with his own pots and pans in fated anticipation of his future calling. It's too adorbs for words. Rated: 3/5 Dec 6, 2018 Full Review Mark Feeney Boston Globe Flynn, who looks like a younger version of the young Christian Slater, is skinny, intense, a bit wary. If you've ever been the parent of a male adolescent - if you've ever been a male adolescent - you'll recognize him. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 23, 2018 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views Why is not anyone worried about a kid working nonstop or do child labor laws not apply as well? Where are his friends? Because after service, he cannot go out drinking at bars with his coworkers. Jun 9, 2024 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema McGarry is a fascinating subject, but 'Chef Flynn' is too fascinated with him to paint a proper portrait. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 26, 2021 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review It's impossible to watch the film and not be impressed by his gastronomy skills, even if his personality and perfectly quaffed hair might rub you the wrong way. But this kid can drop out because he has a job? Bs Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Great documentary on an excellent young chef. Good kid and very talented. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Good for you, Chef Flynn! Most people would do anything to have the passion for their occupation that you have for yours. Rock on! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Chef Flynn is a terrific true tale of an unschooler, and how hardship tempers and forms us. At its heart is Flynn, altogether charming in his steadfast focus on the prize, adding the title Chef to his name. Behind the scenes, but everywhere in Flynn's life, is Meg, his unconventional mom, cheerleader, and the one who makes sure that what her child wants happens. Some would say after parents split, with Flynn's father suffering from alcoholism and depression, that he would need school and activities to be whole. Wisely his mom listened to her son and followed his vision for his own life, enabling him to form and realize his dream bit by bit. Only by being an unshooler at home was he able to dive deeply into the work that called him and become an expert at a young age. Kudos to Meg and parents like her. She admits that she had a different vision for her life before she discovered how much she loved being a mom. It's really a testament to the love of Flynn's parents that they provided the support for their son to learn to fly and take off to soar on their own. Team Flynn FTW!
