Critics Consensus

A rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical, Chicago succeeds on the level of pure spectacle, but provides a surprising level of depth and humor as well.

Chicago's so engrossing that you even forget to reach out for the Coke n' popcorn. Now isn't that entertainment! Go to Full Review

In effect it is filmed theatre, but this brings its own compensations: the more fake Chicago looks, the more real it seems to get. Go to Full Review

What makes this more than a film of a great stage show is the way that the action spills seamlessly from the stage sets into real life. Magic. Go to Full Review

A couple of songs were left behind and I find the rat-a-tat editing distracting from the performances and musical numbers.... [T]he mercenary spirit and the splashy musical numbers, however, give the entire cast their moment in the spotlight Go to Full Review

Aditya R @Aditya107 5d Fame Is the Verdict: Chicago Treats Justice Like Entertainment Chicago (2002; listed as 2003 on Prime Video) is a film adaptation of the Broadway musical, and I watched it on Amazon Prime Video (through Paramount+). The runtime listed on the platform is 1 hour 48 minutes. The plot is set in 1920s Chicago and follows Roxie Hart, an ambitious young performer who ends up in jail after killing her lover. Roxie's case draws the public's interest, and lawyer Billy Flynn takes over, turning the courtroom into an attraction. The film presents many of its musical numbers as theatrical fantasies, which keeps the theme in focus. In Chicago, fame functions like a verdict, and the best performance wins. The acting and singing clearly show this theme through the characters' choices. Catherine Zeta-Jones softens the edges of her performance with her star presence. During her opening number, All that Jazz, she See more VITALII H @freakynickison Nov 6 As a person who was unfamiliar with this musical and never saw this movie I thought it’s absolutely incredible! Of course I’ve seen clips and heard about “Chicago” but I never was invested. I didn’t even know who was gonna be in the movie. I had such a great time. Katherine and Renee simply understood the assignment. I will never look at them again in the same way I did before I saw THIS. This is brilliant! The story is a bit daft but who cares. Its all about the razzle dazzle. See more Katie J @kjokjo Oct 16 How a movie musical should be! See more Justin S Jun 29 I'd argue this is the best movie musical that's ever been made. Sleek, sexy, endlessly inventive, and biting dark humor. If I could only bring 5 movies to a desert island, this would be one of them. The acting, music, editing, sets, and costumes are stunning.
