T.C. Kemp Birmingham Post The picture has some dramatic moments but, as a whole, it falls undecidedly between romance and realism. Feb 19, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A very fine action adventure flick set in war torn China in 1941. With a very brisk 79 minutes, China moves without really stopping. The action is good for what looks to be a lower budgeted film of the 40s. Ladd, Young and Bendix are a winning trio in this, especially Bendix who steals the film from the two leads with his sympathetic performance as the sidekick. Surprisingly not a crazy ton of anti-Asian sentiment in this which was shocking sense the US was in the middle of a war with Japan. Sure the filmmakers made them evil power hungry nation but no overt racism other than a few stereotypes, which I give the filmmakers props for.  You can tell this had an influence on Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, down to the lead characters name being Jones and basically identical outfit. China is definitely a good fun weekend afternoon adventure film, I recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Extremely dated film still is entertaining because of Alan Ladd and Bendix and their chemistry. Many stereotypes for the Chinese that are portrayed, but generally a film sympathetic to China. Interesting as a historical soap. (in real life, the guy would have sold the gas to the Japanese).
