walter m In 1921, Geremio(Sam Wanamaker) does not want to be risking his life on skyscraper construction projects where he works intermittently to be for nothing. So, he proposes to Kathleen(Kathleen Ryan) but she refuses. Instead, he arranges a marriage through his friend Luigi(Charles Goldner) to bring Annuziata(Lea Padovani) to America. But Geremio does not read the fine print in her letter about wanting a house until her boat is almost ready to dock. First and foremost, "Christ in Concrete" is a valuable reminder of how much immigrants have built and contributed to in the United States. But just as much as them making a new life in a new country that can include living in a house away from the crowded city is part of the American dream, we also see here how it can just as easily turn into a nightmare.(And how did I not see that bit of history coming?) To enhance this, the movie is not always filmed naturally but occasionally expressionistically, like in the opening sequence, not to mention the long hike up the flight of stairs to the walk-up apartment. And while the movie can feel a little dated at times, it is not as bad as it could have been, especially considering this was filmed in England, slightly wobbly accents and all.
