The feel-good story tries too hard to be a cheery Christmas story, but its dry mixture of lame comedy and limp drama comes off as ridiculous melodrama. Go to Full Review

Haunted by H Dec 23 CHRISTMAS EVE is a B movie that assembles an all-star cast, with George Brent, George Raft, and Randolph Scott starring in separate and largely unconnected storylines that eventually tie together at the end. Neither storyline exudes a lot of Christmas spirit, especially Raft's film noir storyline (arguably the most memorable part of the film). Brent, Raft, and Scott also play to their stereotypes, almost to the point of self-parody. Even Joan Blondell gets into the act by playing Brent's wise-cracking girl Friday. If that's not campy enough, imagine 1930s star Ann Harding playing the adopted mother of Raft, Brent, and Scott. She does and it is weird! While this formula may not sound all that interesting to those who want more traditional (and predictable) Christmas offerings, CHRISTMAS EVE is an odd film that almost works. Therefore, I recommend it to those who thrive on odd and obscure misfit films. See more Steve D 01/19/2024 A bit contrived but the cast makes the best of it. See more rob m 12/17/2022 A sweet and charming Christmas film, and not at all what I expected. The sub-plots are all completely different, ranging from romantic comedy to crime noir, and all involve three sons who have gone their own way and if they will or will not return in time for a Christmas eve to help their adoptive mother avoid losing her fortune. Maybe a little contrived but still entertaining. See more 11/18/2015 Great classic Christmas movie! See more 12/14/2012 A simple three part story of Rich Woman not wanting to give her fortune away to a conniving nephew. In order to do this she must unite her three sons by Christmas Eve which are all over the world & either night club owner, gangster & wannabe cowboy. The film I watched was a terrible print which did the film no favors and was a very edgy & violent film for a so called Christmas Film. I would love to re visit the film when a better print surfaces, George Raft was the stand out in a out of place Christmas Film.
