      Critics Consensus

As an action movie, Riddick offers some thrills, but as a sequel to Pitch Black, it's a disappointment.

DOMONIQUE S I THINK "THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK ISN'T MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME, BUT IT'S STUPID! AND OF COURSE, AN A-, BY THE WAY Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Lilith C I love, love, love watching it. I find it entertaining. It is great action and fantasy movie. Plus i like the humour Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Emilliano Jr S Too many clichés like I didn't understand what I watched Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Sterling G Great News for Riddick fans, Riddick #4 in the works! This series is proof Rotten Tomatoes is just that, ROTTEN. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Josh G A simple and pleasant film but lacks the technical direction with a dull uninspired color tone and meh acting. It's an OK start to a cool but forgettable franchise. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/30/23 Full Review Victor O Vin Diesel was on a roll creating three surprise box office successes, each promised a sequel. Fast and the Furious, xXx, and Pitch Black. With Diesel only available to do one, and he chose Pitch Black. Those other films would have sequels, just without Vin. Was it the right choice? Five years after the events of Pitch Black. In a distant future where humanity explores the galaxy residing among other planets, Riddick is an outlaw having survived a transfer that became an epic adventure as he endured to make his way as only a fugitive outlaw can become when he is eventually caught due to a bounty placed upon him by someone he saved in the previous film. An evil empire known as the Necromongers is out to conquer and convert all planets that come across their path, but the Lord Marshall, its supreme ruler, is in fear of a prophecy that will see his demise at the hands of a Furyan, a race of beings that Riddick belongs to. With that type of threat, Riddick is sought to be that man who will destroy the Lord Marshall. But Riddick is nobody's savior, he just wants to be left alone but has no choice, if he wants to survive, he must fight. I saw the previous film and the animated prequel, and I have to say that while clearly, money has been poured to make this the equivalent of Conan the Barbarian in space, I think it went against the character of Riddick from Pitch Black. From a surprise hit to a large-scale epic was an odd turn. Also, I didn't particularly appreciate how it added a political element with Lord Marshall's family conspiring against him. Vin Diesel was great, and the cast was splendid in many respects, but this wasn't the franchise that he should have chosen. Something Faster and more Furious perhaps. Nell Minow Common Sense Media Very violent, brainless explosion movie.
