Critics Consensus

As an action movie, Riddick offers some thrills, but as a sequel to Pitch Black, it's a disappointment.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Very violent, brainless explosion movie. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Time Out The sequel baton pass at the finale is pretty nifty, but it's surely asking too much to think the filmmakers could leave us wanting more. Come to think of it, much, much less would have been best. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Nev Pierce BBC.com Diesel is an imposing screen presence even when growling risible dialogue. Rated: 2/5 Aug 31, 2004 Full Review Jeff Beck The Blu Spot The Chronicles of Riddick improves upon its predecessor in several ways, [but] still gets bogged down a little too much by its heavily-distracted middle portion... ultimately making for a sequel that almost works as a cheesy sci-fi outing. Rated: 3/5 Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Self-indulgent nonsense filled to the brim with pointless action sequences and a planet-hopping plot that seems to go nowhere. Rated: 1/4 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The scope is grand enough to hope for a full franchise, but the plot just isn't unique enough to want to see more of Riddick's missions. Harold S Disagree strongly with the premise that this is a mindless action movie. It's fun, re-watchable, maybe not as good as the first (what is) but definitely a good watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review J W I've watched this over 30 times Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Blu B It's a generic Sci-fi Action Movie from the 00's cut from the same cloth as the likes of Lara Croft, The Scorpion King, and just every run of the mill/bad late 90's-00's action movie. It's all over the place but I guess alright overall. Riddick is still the best thing here but even he's just alright. It feels like we kind of forget about any character exploration with him for just a story that just sees him become the leader of a Dark Alien Army for reasons....It looks like every generic Sci-Fi from this time period like from iRobot to Battlefield Earth (ok maybe not THAT bad). The CGI is alright but look dated. Sometimes it looks terrible. The camerawork is hit or miss especially with some weird out of place dutch angles. The strobe light action scenes are seizure inducing and easily the worst part. This has a problem in theifrst half of action oversauration and it feels completely mindless. It does slow down once Riddick arrives on the prison planet though for quite a while and the fights are broken up more which does help quite a bit because man his gets terrible in the start with the dumb action that drags and is seizure inducing. Compared to the original this is such a step down across the board it's not even funny. Gone is all the mood, atmosphere, "Dated" style, and horror elements. This is now just mindless full blown action and a more "Modern" pacing than the slow burn of the original. And the results are inferior. I'll give it this, it makes sense but it doesn't feel like there is a purpose it to it other than just to continue the story to continue the story. They legacy characters are all killed, the new ones are forgettable, the villian is super forgettable, and Riddick just becomes a Lead...because. Oddly enough I could MAYBE see if someone seen this first and not the first which apprantly a lot of people aren't even aware it exists it may have a bit more appeal but especially if you've seen the first skip this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Shane O A cult classic at this point , great world building, style, lore and story. I would like to see it fleshed out a bit more and some of the scenes are so dark it’s hard to know what’s happening. I would like to see a reboot with better CGI but maybe it’s better if that doesn’t happen Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review José R. S "It's a very cool action movie with great special effects. The actors do a great job. The story is very well woven, with well-connected lore elements that leave you wanting to know more at the end. It's good food for the kid in all of us." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Luis J C A me cada segundo de esta persona. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
