Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer In Yen Tan's glacially paced movie (every shot is relentlessly symmetrical), the actors are squares in graph-paper compositions. Rated: 2/4 Jan 30, 2009 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Yen Tan's Ciao is a revelation, a minimalist work of maximum effect. It is determinedly understated and consistently expressive, beautifully composed yet never studied. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 29, 2008 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe It's made on the smallest of budgets and features awkward if sincere performances, yet Yen Tan's film still manages to strike a series of plangent emotional truths about speaking one's heart and moving on. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 19, 2008 Full Review John P. McCarthy Boxoffice Magazine In theory, there's no reason a movie shouldn't endeavor to be somber and tentatively hopeful at the same time. In practice, unfortunately, Ciao is depressing and ploddingly elegiac. Rated: 1.5/5 Dec 5, 2008 Full Review Donald J. Levit ReelTalk Movie Reviews The plotline of 'Ciao' is trite -- and the filmmaking itself drags. Dec 4, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

Ben E I noticed that the reviews were saying Ciao was boring. Ciao's plot is too smooth. But I think the director wanted to create an atmosphere, an atmosphere. Ciao has almost no background music. The sound of the piano gives me a very comfortable feeling. Ciao pays more attention to the transformation of the relationship between characters, rather than seeking sensory stimulation like a commercial film. You should probably pay attention to the lines more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/02/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this film 2d before, and this film amazed me,I think, two men fall in love with each other because of another man, haha,no more body touch but a kiss,a long long long time kiss, keep the miss and lonely away, only 2 days from meet to know each other, uha, maybe, this is the last time they can see each other of this lifetime! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member The stereotype made of the mentioned bipolar character is far stretched and inaccurate. Really didn't need to do that to make the story interesting. The three main characters are also very flattened in their dimensions. Hardly any personality at all. Couldn't finish it even if i forced myself. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Despite the lack of character development and the abundance of unnecessarily long scenes, the connection the two main characters develop in the midst of a recent tragedy is far more convincing and palpable than that of a lesser romance/drama film. Ciao is one of the more respectable and honest films portraying gay characters as real human beings rather than the stereotypes as strengthened by most other LGBT-oriented films. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. very low keyed but excellent drama. the acting was superb. I would like to see more movies like this one. Ciao Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Tonights movie...the critics were harsh on it for moving slow, but i thought it was entirely appropriate for the pace given the gravity of the plot...tragically losing your best friend and unrequited love, but having to move on. I feel better for watching it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
