TheMovieSearch R The 2000 adaptation of Cinderella, featuring Kathleen Turner as Claudette, is a puzzling and uneven retelling that never quite finds its footing. While Turner’s performance carries a touch of sophistication and authority, the film itself feels lost in its own reinterpretation. It strays so far from the heart of the beloved fairy tale that it ends up feeling disconnected from its source material—and, unfortunately, from the audience as well. One of the biggest missteps lies in the film’s direction. The tone shifts constantly, leaving viewers unsure whether it wants to be a whimsical reimagining, a grounded drama, or a tongue-in-cheek parody. Instead, it becomes a mixture of all three, resulting in an experience that feels muddled and inconsistent. The director’s vision never seems to settle, and the lack of a clear creative direction drags down what could have been an intriguing modern take on a timeless story. Kathleen Turner, as Claudette, does her best with what she’s given. Her commanding screen presence is undeniable, and she brings a certain flair to her scenes, but even she can’t salvage the underdeveloped script or its jumbled pacing. The supporting cast feels misused, their performances ranging from stiff to overacted. Every moment that could have been heartfelt or memorable gets buried under awkward dialogue and questionable creative decisions. The screenplay’s biggest problem is its identity crisis. In trying so hard to separate itself from Disney’s classic version, it loses sight of what made the story of Cinderella so enduring in the first place—hope, transformation, and resilience. The film changes so much of the lore that it ends up alienating the very audience that came to see a version of the story they love. Instead of feeling fresh or inspired, it feels forced and hollow, as if written simply to check boxes rather than tell a meaningful tale. From a production standpoint, the film looks and feels cheap. The cinematography lacks the grandeur expected of a fairy-tale world, and the set design does little to immerse you in the fantasy. There are brief flashes of creativity, but they vanish quickly beneath clunky execution and weak pacing. Even the score—an essential element in any fairy-tale adaptation—fails to evoke emotion or magic. In the end, this Cinderella is a forgettable entry in a long list of adaptations that tried too hard to be different and ended up being irrelevant. It lacks the charm, heart, and timelessness that define the story’s best versions. Despite Kathleen Turner’s efforts, the movie is ultimately a missed opportunity that fades from memory almost as quickly as the credits roll. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Sadly Turner, Warner & Birkin's talents are sorely wasted in this bizarre rendition of the classic fairytale. I suppose the filmmakers were trying to be cutting-edge. Unfortunately, most of this film should have been left on the cutting-room floor. Don't waste your time.
