A group of lost and lonely characters populate Mexico City's darkened alleyways and seedy bars, and over the course of one night meet each other in unexpected ways. Fede (Diego Luna) struggles to understand his prostitute mother, Lola (Dolores Heredia), and his corrupt police officer father, with whom he later has a fateful encounter. Lola's friend Zeze (Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez) tries to protect her young daughter. Mario (Demián Bichir), a bartender, listens to the stories of a few criminals.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Sariñana creates some genuinely touching moments, and his narrative sleight of hand is impressive, though the overstuffed story line tends to hold the characters down to the level of melodrama.
