Screen writing is average. Plot is OK. But the acting is marvelous. Martin Short is the only actor that could have pulled this one off. And each time I watch it I see some new nuance of his acting previously unnoticed. The comedic timing is perfect, and Charles Grodin plays a perfect neurotic punching bag. And the 13% critic score sounds about right.

This is a down to earth, irreverent yet allegorical, 90s classic. Those who prefer contemporary, over produced, over digitized, dark, vapid films may not like this movie or others from the time period. I realize this gives very little about the plot or any minute specifics, and it's intentional. You either dig it or you don't.
