      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Ill-conceived and desperately unfunny, Clifford stars Martin Short as a 10-year-old boy. You read that correctly. That's the joke.

Candy Loved it! very cute and funny Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/21 Full Review Carrie S There are some movies that age like fine wine, and others that age like milk. THIS was one of the latter. (Kind of sad too, since I remember really liking it when I was a little kid) Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review justasimple m Screen writing is average. Plot is OK. But the acting is marvelous. Martin Short is the only actor that could have pulled this one off. And each time I watch it I see some new nuance of his acting previously unnoticed. The comedic timing is perfect, and Charles Grodin plays a perfect neurotic punching bag. And the 13% critic score sounds about right. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review MA R This is a down to earth, irreverent yet allegorical, 90s classic. Those who prefer contemporary, over produced, over digitized, dark, vapid films may not like this movie or others from the time period. I realize this gives very little about the plot or any minute specifics, and it's intentional. You either dig it or you don't. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/23 Full Review Ricky A The movie is ridiculous but every time Martin Short makes that mischievous face before thinking up a scheme I lose it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/11/23 Full Review Jona I Despite its immaturity, it's weirdly entertaining and sometimes funny. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune The kid is obnoxious from start to finish, and the way he fantasizes about his uncle's girlfriend (Mary Steenburgen) is tasteless. Rated: 1/4 Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times Clifford, starring Martin Short as a precociously nasty 10-year-old, is not a good movie. It's not even good/bad. But Short has a few of those laugh-out-loud moments. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Clifford never quite finds its tone. The course of the plot has an inevitability about it that is about as wearying as it is reassuring... And yet Clifford is intermittently hilarious, mainly thanks to Short's performance. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Andrew Galdi Movie Bitches Its not worthless but it is surely weird, with 15% more direction you could really have something here Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Avaryl Halley Movie Bitches This movie almost could have been great, the bones of a cult classic are there but I still love it. Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Mary Kunz Goldman Buffalo News Kids don't want to see an adult parodying a kid (they don't get the joke) but I laughed like a freak.
