Shock Therapy R The limit was following a previous script. The brilliance was doing it with thoughtful participation as an experiment of pawns in a social chess game, revolting against its rules. If life is no longer the prize in such a social system, then literally anything is possible. This is an intellectual movie first (hence the poor scores among experts and the Jeffersonian rejects), but next it is a playbook for how to evaluate all social systems and do what they have scared you out of doing: risk, and reckless abandon for freedom… on this side, or the next. I honor the subjects of the real life event, and the derivative actors that brought this home to lesser mortals. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/23/22 Full Review Audience Member Excellent and entertaining black comedy/drama loosely based on real events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review thomas a I thought this real-life historical drama would have been enjoyable to watch, with Vera Farmiga as the main star. But nah. It was somewhat boring. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member fun but touching story. Love it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Serge L The group of jews could not live peacefully after the war. They were heroes of the country but still jews, hence easily expendable. When several of the group just got that, they brew a plot to disparage the government at the risk of their lives. They got everything they wanted including.... but I'll leave that out of my comment, the film is worth watching. I still can't help thinking though that psychopathy is the annoying robotisation keeping the world a hellish place. Viva la revolutione! Ed Potton Times (UK) It's always a pleasure to see Mark Strong in a lead role -- too often he's wasted as baddies and bosses. In Closer to the Moon he gets his most interesting part in a while. Rated: 3/5 Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Nev Pierce Empire Magazine Caranfil's unlikely, odd little film is quietly moving - all the more so because it is true. Rated: 4/5 Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Jordan Hoffman Guardian There are a lot of moving moments in this film, and it's to writer-director Nae Caranfil's credit that he's able to tease out the logic in this mostly enjoyable, if a little all-over-the-place, dark comedy. Rated: 3/5 Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Joe Bendel Epoch Times All the major facts of Moon are historically accurate, but the reasons behind the events remain a bit murky. However, Caranfil's speculations are more than persuasive. Rated: 4/5 May 20, 2016 Full Review David Aldridge Radio Times The story is so quintessentially Romanian, it had better been made in Romanian, with Romanian actors. Rated: 2/5 Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Hannah McGill The List It has some moments that effectively convey the weirdness with which it deals; but for the most part it's a missed opportunity, marred by a lack of narrative conviction and tonal cohesion.
