Audience Member Thessaloniki, Greece's "second city," once had one of the most vibrant Jewish communities in the Mediterranean. Originally from the Iberian Peninsula, the Sephardic Jews fled/were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition and brought their culture with them. A few times the characters discuss their lineage going back over 500 years to Spain, their 500 year-old Torah, and some even retained the Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) language. The film includes all the horrors you can expect to find during a Nazi Occupation and expulsion of an entire religious/ethnic group. It's centered on a "Lovers Story," concerning a Jewish girl, Estea (Hristina Heila-Fameli) and Christian boy, Yorgos (Haris Fragolis). It's love at first sight with these two and given their religious differences — and that whole Nazi Occupation thing — they must hide their forbidden love. Estea's ending does add a punch to the movie, which may have pushed this into my recommends. The concurrent storyline concerning Vassilis Tsitsanis (Andreas Konstantinou), a revered "bouzouki" player in Greek culture, felt unnecessary and really just a way to include the local hero into the story. I love this style of music, which sounds like a cousin to Fado in Portugal (or a more morose Flamenco in Spain), and am not complaining that it was included to add a cultural touch to the movie. However, I would've appreciated more if the story between Estea and Yorgos was more fleshed out. Cloudy Sunday is for someone with an interest in Greek history or this much lesser-known section of Europe that fell to Nazi specter.
