Critics Consensus

Clown tries to bag a stylish, gory thrill, but good practical effects can't save this circus of mediocrity.

Glenn Kenny New York Times I would ask any up-and-coming special-effects artist: Just because you can mold a convincing replica of a 6-year-old's severed arm, does it necessarily mean that you should? Jun 17, 2016 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It comes apart about halfway through, losing a very difficult tonal balance. Having said that, there's more to like here than the studio burial would have you believe. Rated: 2/4 Jun 17, 2016 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Clown" has the goods. Refreshingly dark and sick, this is a movie for those who like cinematic monsters that hit so hard they leave a mark. Jun 16, 2016 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Despite dealing with a demon, the film is very grounded. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review While competently made and demonstrating Watts' assured talent, the story and characters fail to engage in any way outside of disturbing us. Audience Member Not as bad as the reviews make it out to be, the clown costume and creature design are very cool and enough to give this movie a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Audience Member The unique plot and overall lore of the story under horror icon, Eli Roth’s production really stands out as one of the best clown horror movies of all time With that being said a more seasoned Director and a higher budget spent on special effects could have made this movie something very special It’s dark tone and child violence is definitely not for everyone, but behind the uneven pacing, subpar special effects, and spotty acting is a horror gem waiting to be discovered 6.8 out of 10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Jules N Une façon intéressante de détourner une figure enfantine et drôle en un monstre, cela n'est pas toujours bien exploité mais propose quelques scènes bien horrifique comme celle dans le parc de jeux d'intérieur. En revanche, on a l'impression que l'héroïne subie les actions qui se déroulent jusqu'à la confrontation finale qui arrive comme un cheveu sur la soupe dans le développement du perso. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review JAMES S There’s a lot of stuff that this movie could’ve done but it just... Doesn't? The world just overall feels small, it’s an OK movie just feel like it could’ve been done better it just feels sloppy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Ryan L You know....if this movie were a kind of origin story for Pennywise the Dancing Clown...I might care about it a little more. Who knows? Maybe they could claim it as canon.
