Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.

Critics Consensus

A funny and clever reshaping of Emma, Clueless offers a soft satire that pokes as much fun at teen films as it does at the Beverly Hills glitterati.

Gina Fattore Chicago Reader Overall Heckerling has perfectly captured the essence of Austen's comedy. Rated: 3/4 Jun 7, 2022 Full Review Deborah Peterson St. Louis Post-Dispatch This movie is satirical. And hysterical. Mar 16, 2021 Full Review Kristin Tillotson Minneapolis Star Tribune Silverstone's read of Cher -- not to mention her overflowing cup of cuteness -- makes the character likable. Rated: 3/5 Mar 16, 2021 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review With a confident irony that never robs its characters of their integrity, Heckerling takes Clueless into a realm that both comments on and inhabits the teen movie archetype, so that what’s left goes beyond the genre’s conventions and builds upon them. Rated: 4/4 Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Adult spectators won't watch it, and the Cher's of society will never understand its irony. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Jay H A teenager tells her friends that size doesn't matter, as long as it's not bent. Later, she begins a romantic relationship with her step-brother, who is in college. Gross... and this movie is not funny at all. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Johann D. M This 1995 coming-of-age teen comedy is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma and centers on a shallow, popular, and rich high school student who befriends a new girl and decides to give her a makeover while playing matchmaker for her teachers and examining her own existence. The film boasts impeccable writing, hilarious dialogue, and unforgettable caricatured characters. The unique scenes make it an incredibly fun and entertaining watch. It is a classic, charming story that perfectly captures its era. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Fabrícia F Divertido, leve, fofo e muito interessante.
