Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.

Critics Consensus

A funny and clever reshaping of Emma, Clueless offers a soft satire that pokes as much fun at teen films as it does at the Beverly Hills glitterati.

Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It’s a loose revamp of Jane Austen’s Emma that buzzes with the kind of emphatic “Valspeak” (Valley Girl parlance) that eventually spread beyond the cinema and helped transform the very rhythm of spoken English. Rated: 4/5 Jul 2, 2025 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Silverstone is amazingly innocent and charming and her sublimely weightless screen presence has a kind of serenity and maturity that belongs to an instinctive comedy performer. Rated: 5/5 Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting With Fast Times and Clueless, Heckerling cements her status as one of Gen X’s preeminent chroniclers—bridging the cultural chasm between the early ’80s and mid-’90s high school experience with uncanny wit, style, and charm. Rated: 4/5 Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Sarah Moran Screen Rant Clueless remains a smart, funny, relatable, and endlessly quotable movie even three decades after it was first released. Rated: 9/10 Jun 29, 2025 Full Review Fred Topel United Press International Cher would probably be aghast everyone has a phone now and that they type instead of talking to each other. She was all about making connections and hanging out in person at parties and the mall. Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times Alicia Silverstone's near Oscar-worthy comedic turn almost defined her entire acting career, and with good reason—'Clueless' is still great fun 30 years later.
