Chris V There's a line in the movie where an officer criticises the planned mission as foolhardy and designed to hook somebody a Victoria Cross. Knowing something of the mission, that's my view too. This film strikes an uneasy pose between a sort of "Crikey what larks!" atmosphere and the serious business of military courage. I'm sure a much better film about this hare-brained and ultimately unsuccessful mission is waiting to be made. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Good film with plenty of laughs at the start but and a decent plot to match. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Rousing British WWII film celebrating the Royal Marines and their commando attack by canoe on ships in Bordeaux in 1942. Somewhat accurate, except it makes the raid seem significant and successful. But what the heck; Brits love these sorts of war stories featuring daring, plucky men executing clever, quirky, plans. Mysteriously directed by and starring Jose Ferrer, and also includes Christopher Lee's 34th performance (out of his 274 so far). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I've know the name of this film for more or less ever, but I don't think that I had ever watched it until last night, when I caught up with the Sky+ recording I'd made after the BBC showed it to accompany Captain Ashdown's excellent documentary about the Bordeau raid last week. Great story and a classic film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
