      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

C.O.G.'s plot is a bit meandering, but the characters are always compelling and the ending is richly rewarding.

robert p I did like this movie, but like most folks, I did not like the idea of his friend/killer and a great social update that no person who is Gay will ever see such hate. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Horrible. Pointless. Watching paint dry. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm a fan of Jonathan Groff, but this movie was beyond dreadful and should have never been made. The plot is ridiculous, incomplete, nonsensical ...and story has zero meaning or resolution of anything. The only thing worse were some of the characters. Why this movie was ever made is beyond me. There was nothing to be told here. Huge waste of time. Awful! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I understand the bad reviews. I really do. The movie starts slow and drags on at first, and David is hardly a character we are pulling for. He comes off as out of touch and elitist in the opening scenes where he is riding a bus and it takes awhile for him to start to win us over. But despite digging such a big hole, director and writer Kyle Patrick Alvarez pulls this movie up with great story telling. As the movie develops and David grows as a character we start to not only warm to him, but understand his strange and somewhat immature quest for identity. We see why he is so confused and why he seems to swing to such extremes in his journey of self discovery. Overall I liked the movie, great acting and a fine job from Alvarez. But the film is not without its flaws early on and it does take time for it to find itself. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Wish they would make more of David Sadaris's essays and books into movies. He's definitely one of the great modern writers. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/23/18 Full Review Audience Member Not comedy, not gay, just an autobiography from one of those who had the guts to go out there and live life and noy only pass by it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune Modest and good-looking, the film starts as dark comedy and ends in pathos. Director Alvarez makes the Oregon scenery a character unto itself. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 20, 2013 Full Review Dan Callahan RogerEbert.com People who approach it as a film in its own right, with its own rhythms and goals and pleasures, will be amply rewarded. Sep 20, 2013 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Despite smatterings of wit and a stable of skilled performers, "C.O.G." struggles to find a consistent tone, its episodic structure veering from farcical to poignant to dangerously raw. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 19, 2013 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter In Kyle Patrick Alvarez's funny adaptation of David Sedaris' essay, out actor Jonathan Groff channels a prideful sissy-boy on the verge of hilarious pratfalls... Jun 19, 2020 Full Review Alexander Ryll Gay Essential There are two other somewhat unrelated parts to C.O.G. - making the entire film inadvertently seem as if it exists as three largely unrelated stories with David as their only link. Sep 15, 2019 Full Review Bernard Boo Way Too Indie We should love these characters, but Alvarez hurries by them and doesn't give us much of a chance to get acquainted.
