Kate Taylor Globe and Mail Intriguingly, the director has successfully woven a Kafkaesque metaphor into a classically Chinese melodrama. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2015 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News A modern yet timeless tragedy that's desperate, sad and rich with devotion. Rated: B+ Oct 2, 2015 Full Review Bruce DeMara Toronto Star Chen and Gong, two of China's most respected actors, offer two great performances in a film about love, loss and perseverance that will nearly break your heart. Oct 1, 2015 Full Review Denise Pieniazek A Sala Llena (Argentina) In a China going through the Cultural Revolution, the love story between Feng and Lu takes place. Its director, Zhang Yimou, here the central theme is more earthly: the reunion between two people who love each other. Aluna U Coming Home poignantly tells the story of Lu Yanshi’s decade-long separation from his wife Wangyu due to political imprisonment and her subsequent amnesia that erases her memory of him. Despite the pain and obstacles, Lu’s unwavering devotion drives him to reconnect with Wangyu and mend their fractured family, highlighting themes of loyalty and enduring love. With powerful performances and a deeply emotional narrative, the film captures the bittersweet reality of love tested by time and loss. That said the quietly devastating nature of the movie seems harsh enough, with the characters forever doomed to be frozen in time and unable to come to terms with their new reality. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/25 Full Review Georgan G Very touching film. This is a story of great sorrow and heavy losses. The husband who finally returns from prison camp is not recognizable to the amnesic wife. Yet he persists in finding ways to be with her. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review william d Gong Li's beauty may not bowl me over as it once did, but her acting still does. She is one of cinema's greatest actresses. Even when acting in crappy movies (see, e.g. Chinese Box) she still manages to shine. However, there's little chance that Coming Home would be crappy with Zhang Yimou at the helm. This is a beautiful film, both poignant and heartwarming. And Li's costar Chen Daoming is superb as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit too perfectly romantic, à la “The Notebook”, but the tragedy of families separated by the Cultural Revolution and the long-lasting impact make for a good human story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/30/20 Full Review Audience Member Filmed with emotional tenderness and unerring pictorial power. Gong Li wonderful as always. Marvellous film.
