DanTheMan 2 As gritty as it is operatic, Confessions of a Police Captain offers a much more sober affair than what you would usually expect of this genre, defying so many of the staples, instead delivering a well-worn and intricately crafted investigative thriller. Damiano Damiani creates an intricate analysis of obsession, corruption and the fine line between law and disorder; a sustained work of formal expression, with a visceral power all the more effective because of the control behind the energy emanating from every image. His direction and the photography work perfectly to add to the tension of its well-plotted proceedings, it's a lived-in world that feels perfectly natural and never overplayed, lacking things such as car chases, gun fights and fisticuffs that you'd normally see in this type of film speaks volumes of the confidence Damiani exudes in his storytelling ability. The two central performances are easily one of the film's strongest elements. Martin Balsam is fantastic as the titular police commissioner, cynical and irresponsible, however, even better than him is the beautifully moustachioed Franco Nero as the district attorney, embodying the lost idealism of his co-star; both men inhabit their respective roles perfectly with Damiani underlining the similarities between these two men, both just stooges of a corrupt, ancient system, in subtle ways. Backed by a terrific score by Riz Ortolani, Confessions of a Police Captain is an excellent little thriller, perfectly paced and compellingly classy, an uncompromising look at power and corruption that remains just as frank and disturbing today as it did back then. I can easily see myself watching more of Damiani's films if they continue to be of this calibre. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Police captain and DA fight career criminal and corruption within the city; a look at the futility of dealing with organized crime when their influence extends everywhere. Good cast led by Franco Nero and Martin Balsalm. A better print than the one offered in The Grindhouse Collection should be sought out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member The police release a prisoner from a mental institute knowing that he will try to kill an organized crime figure. When the prisoner fails, the District Attorney tries to put the pieces of what happened together. Pretty good film. Liked the ending but I find the Italian film industry's habit of dubbing voices baffling. Why would you do that to Franco Nero? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A powerful masterpiece, highly recommended and thoroughly impressive. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a pretty watchable little Euro-crime film that I noticed in a collection of Grindhouse stuff that I've had hanging around for awhile now, and finally decided to give it a peep. An early film in this cycle of Mafia related films, this never got as action oriented as the few other films I've seen within the genre, but it's an okay way to pass and afternoon. Worth a rental.
