Maj. Michael Curragh (Robert Taylor), an Englishman, and American Melinda Greyton (Elizabeth Taylor) get married, but she has no idea he's working as a spy for the USSR. The Soviets quickly make it clear they're worried his identity will be revealed, so they tell Michael to kill his bride. The Soviet fears are well-founded, as Melinda is in the process of uncovering her husband's secret, and the newlyweds find themselves wrestling with the hazardous complications of espionage and love.

Variety Staff Variety In the unfolding of the major theme the story lacks dramatic intensity, and little effort is made to justify the action of the central character. Aldo G Elizabeth Taylor, at age 16, delivers a sensational performance as a naive teen who falls in love with a British officer (Robert Taylor) who is a Soviet spy. The studio, though, should have NEVER cast the minor Taylor in such a role, despite her fantastic performance. Despite bad reviews, I think this is a fine film. I just wish there was a better print available than the one I saw on TCM. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review bill t Pretty good entertainment. Elizabeth Taylor is ravishing as usual, but Robert Taylor isn't that believable as the UK soldier selling secrets to an unnamed secret nation. Seemed to get more ridiculous as it went on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The Taylor's do well in this political thriller, with Rob being the golden boy with a hidden, difficult past and Liz just gushing with emotional self-conscience. Fairly standard film making don't detract from the script, which got two stars who perhaps gave more than this production deserved. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member In the unfolding of the major theme the story lacks dramatic intensity, and little effort is made to justify the action of the central character. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member what bothered me most was that elizabeth, playing an american, had more of an english accent than robert, who played an englishman. story wise, it could have been interesting but was lacking. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review ashley h Conspirator has a lot of realism in this film. It is about an American girl who fell in love a British soldier who was a Soviet Union spy. Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor (no relation to Robert Taylor) give exceptional performances. The screenplay is well written. Victor Saville did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed this motion picture because of the thrills and drama. Conspirator is a must see. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
