TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 8 hrs ago Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg was actually a pretty decent movie. I thought it did everything it needed to do to keep the story moving and keep the action relevant without taking things too far and turning the film into something cheesy or unrealistic. Mark Wahlberg once again did a good job carrying the role, and the screenplay was strong enough to keep me focused throughout the story. Everything continued building in a way that made sense, and I never felt like the movie was losing its direction. I will say that his wife’s character genuinely shocked me. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I found myself really worried about her throughout the entire film. That added another layer to the story and gave me something else to become invested in. Overall, I think they did a good job pulling everything together and delivering the action, suspense, and storytelling the movie needed. Chris Farraday is a former smuggler trying to stay clean, but Wahlberg gives him the confidence, street knowledge, and no-nonsense presence needed to make his return to that world believable. The setup is simple and effective: one last illegal job to protect his family. The cargo-ship angle gives the movie a slightly different flavor from a standard heist thriller, with ports, customs, counterfeit money, and criminal networks adding a decent hook. Giovanni Ribisi brings twitchy, unstable energy as Tim Briggs, making him feel dangerous in a messy, desperate way. The supporting cast, including Ben Foster, Kate Beckinsale, J.K. Simmons, Caleb Landry Jones, and Diego Luna, gives are stonger than the plot might have had otherwise. The story is familiar, and the resolution feels too convenient, but Contraband is watchable and has enough grit to work in places. Director Baltasar Kormákur’s crime drama Contraband (2012) is really excellent with gritty craftsmanship, strong acting, alongside clever writing. I saw there were a ton of negative reviews and it kind of surprised me as Contraband is very cool. Suspenseful, clever, and very exciting with plenty of action. I found Contraband riveting. Seeing a guy forced to smuggle goods overseas with hidden compartments and through security is quite intense. Mark Wahlberg is pretty cool as a former smuggler trying to save his family. Wahlberg is great and tough as Chris Farraday. He carries his lead role. Kate Beckinsale is very stunning as Wahlberg’s wife Kate Farraday. Her scenes are very suspenseful and unnerving in a couple of home invasion scenes. Ben Foster is super sinister and underhanded as Sebastian. In short, Contraband is awesome and worth a watch.
