Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com Tran is brilliant here, giving a performance that’s perfectly modulated no matter how upsetting or bizarre things get. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 13, 2025 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News “Control Freak” is at its best when Val digs into her past and confronts the demons inside of her and the ones she sees in front of her. D Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 12, 2025 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal The compositions and palette are occasionally stunning (the cinematographer is Scott Siracusano), and while the story lacks a certain momentum, the intention, quite successful, is to keep a viewer curious. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Brian Farvour The Playlist Folk horror elements attempt to weasel their way into the narrative. Still, all of this takes a backseat to predictability, half-hearted jump scares, and a flow that...often allows the audience to predict the following line. Rated: C- Apr 11, 2025 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X Thematically and viscerally, Control Freak succeeds. Rated: B Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Gavia Baker-Whitelaw Inverse Ngo definitely has the juice as a director of hide-your-eyes horror setpieces. But while Control Freak benefits from plenty of worthwhile ingredients, it still isn’t fully cooked, making it a mid-range effort in the realm of straight-to-streaming horror. SkyRo P I went into Control Freak excited to see Kelly Tran take on a darker role. Tran, who many know and love as the voice of Raya in Raya and the Last Dragon, is a wonderful actor with a lot of range. But this film, honestly, was a huge letdown. The story centers on a woman whose body is overtaken by a demon from her home country — a possession that drives her from a successful motivational speaker into someone entirely unpredictable and dangerous. It’s a premise with potential, but the execution fell flat. As the possession deepens, we watch Tran’s character lose credibility, relationships, and control over her own life. The dramatic descent could have made for a powerful thriller, but instead it felt messy and disjointed. The writing seemed unsure of what story it wanted to tell, and the direction made some awkward choices that kept me from feeling invested in the character’s struggles. I appreciate Kelly Tran’s talent — she’s a great actor and a wonderful Disney princess — but this film simply didn’t do her justice. The weak script and confusing direction made it hard for me to connect with the story or care about its outcome. At the end of the day, Control Freak was a missed opportunity. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Christian K Even if she wasn't being inhabited by a hereditary demon that wants her to kill herself, the writing of the main character makes her impossible to root for or care about at all. Also, she beat the demon because????????? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Angela W This is true horror. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Courtney K this was alright. i really liked the concept of it - but I think it could've been executed better. felt disconnected/over-the-top most of the time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Brittany H Potential in concept, but major plot holes. This film would’ve been a great short. It’s clear the DP comes from a music video background, and went way overboard with lighting and fancy lens choices. The set design was beautiful, but again way over board. It left me feeling like I was observing the movie instead of being a part of it. The cgi was BAD. That’s all there is to that. Crazy how this movie has so many good reviews. Not at all the psych horror I was expecting. Again, the talent is there, but it did not hold up to the expectations set by the tomatometer. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Mike L This was a great modern horror / thriller. Moody, eerie, and deranged in all the right ways. The last half in particular was a thrill to watch. Great acting showcase for Kelly Marie Tran, and director Shal Ngo is one to watch!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
