      Critics Consensus

Less compelling -- and more manipulative -- than it should be, Conviction benefits from its compelling true story and a pair of solid performances from Swank and Rockwell.

While legal inaccuracies may exist, I think the film came across well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A fairly standard wrongful conviction story that is elevated by the extraordinary circumstances of the real life case, as well as fine performances from Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review jon c Hilary Swank, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Clea Duvall, Juliette Lewis, Peter Gallagher, and Sam Rockwell in a powerful human drama about convincing everybody else of the truth Based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters; she has been spending 18 years in Massachusetts studying to become a lawyer to get her wrongly convicted brother Kenny out of prison. He was accused of murder so Betty Anne works hard to overturn the evidence piled against him. There may he doubts though about his innocence. Considering he also has a record everything seems stacked against him. Betty's love for him and persistence will keep her going though. This is a story that proves anyone will fight for their family no matter the odds. It's true too people don't like to admit their wrong. There's injustice to be had in the justice system itself. Even two siblings will go to extreme lengths for one another to make family whole again. Very compelling and truly inspiring movie with terrific performances all around. Deborah Ross The Spectator At best, you probably won't mind sitting through it too much, but that's about it. It's a plodder. Plod, plod, plod, plod. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online For the big screen, it didn't hold up as strong but did manage to hash out a good story led by strong performances regardless. Rated: B+ Sep 9, 2017 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, the latter portraying Kenny as an uncontrollable force of nature, and also Melissa Leo, who is quietly powerful as the arresting officer, are all excellent. Rated: 3/5 Feb 24, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review There’s nothing offensively wrong with the production, except that it’s so predictable. Rated: 2/4 Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) A thriller based on actions not words. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site The film's depiction of Betty Anne's passionate crusade to exonerate Kenny is well done, generating a gripping, but balanced, momentum.
