Audience Member Very, very early-60's. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm a sucker for a good prison drama. In this film artist Ben Gazzara is sent to prison for killing a toy store owner over a teddybear for his child. Once in prison there is the usual shakedowns, con men, mean & decent prison guards, and assorted colorful characters, but it's all done so well and Gazzara is so compelling in the lead that it elevates the pretty standard formula prison story into something much better. The excellent cast includes Stuart Whitman, Ray Walston, Vincent Price, Rod Steiger, Broderick Crawford, Sammy Davis Jr., and the always great Timothy Carey who has a very memorable first scene. There's also a great jazzy score by Leonard Rosenthal. This film was apparently loosely based upon a true story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I just watched a block of prison movies on TCM & they were either OK or straight up sucked so when I got to Convicts 4, I really wasn't expecting all that much.Convicts 4 was the last movie on the block so I guess TCM saved the best for last.It was a pretty decent movie & I didn't know it was based on an autobiography until I read it on another site but I think that's what made it better then the others. It was based on an actual person & not just a prison movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A well-known cast in an overly maudlin melodrama.
