Mat Brunet AniMat's Review (YouTube) Out of all of his films, Ralph Bakshi himself considers Coonskin to be his greatest work, and I couldn’t agree more. Rated: 9/10 Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault As scabrously entertaining, and as awash in necessary offense, as the day it was released. And also, unfortunately, as relevant. Rated: A Aug 30, 2022 Full Review Jacoba Atlas Los Angeles Free Press Its primary fault is structure: Bakshi is a man who knows good bits but does not know how to bring them together to make a movie. Noe G Coonskin is my number one most favorite Ralph Bakshi film I give this film a 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Dane W it a good blaxploitation movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/23 Full Review Devon B The movie is a satirical film about America's viewing of black people, the Hollywood industry, the mafia and the Blaxploitation genre that was very popular at the time. The plot is basically two plots switching from animation to live action. The animated part tells the story which is in the form of an Uncle Ramus folktale about 3 guys Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear, and Preacher Fox Brother Rabbit leaves his farm home to go to Harlem in order to take over the crime racket that's going on. The other plots are about a couple of friends named Samson( played by Barry White) and The Preacher (played by Charles Gordone) who are trying to bust they're best friend Randy (played by Philip Michael Thomas) out of jail. There's also this miss America character who portrays America itself. This is a very informative movie, i'm really glad that I was able to understand things because I kind of have a little trouble understanding what's going when comes to some of Bakshi's films but this time I understood what was going on and I could explain in good detail. But that's not the only reason why I liked it not just because I was able to understand it. The reason I liked the movie was due to the same reason I liked Fritz the Cat due to its excitement and enjoyable themes. But of course just like a lot of other Bakshi films there are scenes that don't make sense and feel as if it has nothing to do with the film. But it's still a bizarre, crazy, weird sort of experience. I would have to give this movie 3 in a half thumbs up because it's not an amazing movie but still good enough to scrape by. At least I think it is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is a masterpiece of satire. As one who experienced the 70's, it superbly captures the zeitgeist of the decade. The concept is brilliant: an urban, satirical take on Disney's "Song of the South." Not PC in the least, this film mercilessly satirizes everything. Remember, without Bakshi's "Heavy Traffic", and this film, no "Simpsons", no "Family Guy" exists. Somehow more relevant than ever, this film is Bakshi's masterpiece. 4 1/2 out of 5. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Politically incorrect, but that's what I love about it. It's a movie that took a lot of balls to make and release, and was controversial back in 1975, which means...NO WAY IN HELL would it be made or released today. It may take a few viewings to really appreciate it, once you get past the shock factor. That's if you can. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Boy, did Bakshi have balls of steel to create this controversial film? If you can look past its racial overtones, this film has a brilliant story Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
