What to Know

Critics Consensus

Cop Car boasts a terrific premise and a grimly gripping opening act -- and for some viewers, that will be enough to compensate for the movie's uneven denouement.

Ibad Shah indieWire [Cop Car] doesn't offer much in the way of substantial character development, but that's not a deterrent when the fun twists keep coming. Rated: B+ Sep 13, 2017 Full Review Kate Taylor Globe and Mail Watts walks us innocents out into the landscape where Hollywood has made its greatest myths and then removes the blindfold. Rated: 4/4 Aug 28, 2015 Full Review Bruce DeMara Toronto Star Anchored by solid performances and a taut script, Cop Car is a tension-filled thrill ride. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2015 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The story’s intensity boils to what seems like a satisfying crescendo only to hit us with a new set of stakes and then leave us on an emotional edge. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Watts demonstrates his confidence as a filmmaker with a straightforward style, immediate characters, and an undeniably crafty manipulation of tension in subtle, funny, and at times frightening ways. Adam F While this movie starts slow, it goes into overdrive in a hurry, and does not slow down after that. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Karl P Perhaps it was due to a bad edit for tv, but it didn't seem to have an ending. Up until then, I was with it. Kevin Bacon and Hsea Wigham were both very good as bad guys. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Oakley Athanasius M Taut, well photographed, and original. Sorry it isn't full of senseless gore or CGI. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review ken d A good plot, an original story, well acted and gripping; but it ends in the middle of the film. I have watched a few movies lately that have been spoiled in the same way. I'd say to the writers, "If you can't see the thing through, then don't bother."
