During World War II, two Russians, soldier Alexei Kulkov (Paul Muni) and navigator Lisa Elenko (Marguerite Chapman), are trapped underground with a group of Germans. Having recently witnessed a colleague's skillful interrogation of a Nazi prisoner, Kulkov tries to prod the enemy soldiers into sharing details about Berlin's strategy. But one of the Germans is just as shrewd, and he and Kulkov engage in a set of mind games that mirror the methods employed on the battlefield.

Wolcott Gibbs New Yorker John Howard Lawson seems to have made some changes from the original [play] as I remember it, but they are not in the nature of improvements, and the piece remains essentially a very heavy dose of Soviet propaganda. Oct 15, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve D Clever war film with a strong script and great star. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Audience Member Very original ww2 movie. To be honest, this film has not dated after all these decades. Based on a play which becomes clear as you watch the film, but the cat-and-mouse script really works well. who is the general? who is telling the truth? a great film.
