The makers forget something huge, it was called the Draft. Which means after Pearl Harbor, the choice to enlist or not too was no longer a choice. Pretty much every eligible man was taken, whether you wanted to go or not. Have no idea why they changed the time period when the song is country song and probably would work better as a western, like the Gambler. It's not horrible or unwatchable but it's bad enough to avoid it unless you really love Kenny Rogers and need to see everything he made. It's pretty sickly sweet with a script that in places is so clean that it borders on unnatural, but it's an easy watch on a slow afternoon.
