You'd be forgiven for guessing that Crash Pad is yet another lazy, cable-unworthy comedy full of sorry slapstick and barn-broad humor. And you'll be surprised to discover that it's actually smartly written and expertly pulled off.

The premise had such potential, particularly with a talented cast, but ultimately the film is not greater than the sum of its parts. Applegate, through no fault of her own, plays a character that the writers cant seem to determine if she is the villain or victim. A wife and business woman, feeling neglected by her husband and believing she is being cheated on, has a fling with a twenty something loser. That loser, Domhnall Gleeson, is written in a way to make him so strange, it is hard to feel the sympathy it seems we are meant to. Rather than being content with his one night stand, he attempts to extort Applegate by threatening to tell her husband when she doesn't instantly fall madly in love with him. The plan backfires for all involved when Applegate tells her husband and said husband decides to move in with Gleeson to bother his wife. He ends up mentoring Gleeson with women, but ultimately the teacher becomes the student, learning to appreciate his wife again. While this is a cute concept, the execution falls apart.
