With the help of student assistant Boris (Vincent Spano) and stolen university equipment, Dr. Harry Wolper (Peter O'Toole) plans to clone his dead wife. But then he meets Meli (Mariel Hemingway), an egg donor for his experiment, and they fall in love. Faced with choosing between his deceased wife and Meli, Dr. Wolper sees his situation in a new light when Boris' own new love, Barbara (Virginia Madsen), falls into a coma. I fell in love with this the first time I saw it back in the 80's--having just rewatched it for the first time in decades, I still love it. Strange blend of sweet romance, philosophical musings, smart comedy, and drama both professional and medical. Every main character gets a chance to shine in their own unique niche, and there are many quotable lines. Tell me you don't want to see a movie where you get to watch Peter O'Toole say this: "One day we will peer into our microscopes and find ourselves staring into God's eyes--and the first one who blinks will lose his testicles!"
