This French drama, loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic novel, follows Inspector Gallet (Jean Gabin), a Parisian police detective in pursuit of a callous murderer. The person is question is René Brunel (Robert Hossein), a university student who decides that society's laws don't apply to him, and manages to justify the killing of a wealthy old woman in his own mind. Gallet slowly closes in on Brunel, and a kindhearted prostitute (Marina Vlady) eventually gets drawn into the proceedings.

This version of Crime and Punishment is pretty good, had some interesting ideas up it's sleeve.. Especially with the sleaze of a fiancee of the sister of the lead character has to deal with. The story is all there, it may have just been a wee bit TOO heavy handed for me to enjoy.. I zapped out a few times.
