This French drama, loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic novel, follows Inspector Gallet (Jean Gabin), a Parisian police detective in pursuit of a callous murderer. The person is question is René Brunel (Robert Hossein), a university student who decides that society's laws don't apply to him, and manages to justify the killing of a wealthy old woman in his own mind. Gallet slowly closes in on Brunel, and a kindhearted prostitute (Marina Vlady) eventually gets drawn into the proceedings.

Bill T This version of Crime and Punishment is pretty good, had some interesting ideas up it's sleeve.. Especially with the sleaze of a fiancee of the sister of the lead character has to deal with. The story is all there, it may have just been a wee bit TOO heavy handed for me to enjoy.. I zapped out a few times. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
