      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Agatha Christie fans may find enough intrigue to hold their attention while a capable cast gives their all, but there's no escaping the gaudy pitfalls of this Crooked House.

Kaascat Terrible movie. Bad adaptation, the characters are all wrong and the script tumbles clumsily between the book and constant anachronistic references both stylistically and thematically. The character of Brenda was particularly butchered. Too bad :/ Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Jack S Everyone loves a good mystery. But they'll not find one here. There's simply nothing particularly interesting or the least bit suspenseful in this one. Close and Anderson provide a bit of much needed fun, but unfortunately Irons and Martini as the leads, are both pretty but dull, lacking any chemistry together. Plus, the shockingly abrupt conclusion is unsatisfactory. The only creditable aspect of the film is the imposing country house and grounds which provide a colorful and atmospheric setting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/23 Full Review Frances H A great cast and intriguing mysteryy made this film an intriguing watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Shi Yu L A bit boring. Wanted to stop watching in the middle because it's so dull. I just continued watching it only to find out who the killer was. Otherwise, I would have stopped watching it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Audience Member 2.7 something felt missing Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/23 Full Review Rogue P Incredibly slow pace, inexplicably rapid editing where each - line - gets - its - own - CUT - back - and - forth - between - actors - for - NO - REASON, and composition that often made me wonder if either the director or the camera person was even looking through the lens while filming. I know we're still in the age of the jittery camera - which one can assume is to fool the audience into believing they're not actually watching a movie, but somehow in the scene (I guess?) - but if they DP was going for a "Law & Order" vibe, they instead ended up with a "the-sea's-too-rough-to-film-straight" vibe. No one can be blamed for turning this movie off after only the first 15 minutes, though if you'd rather fast-forward to the last 15 minutes and get to the only part of a mystery anyone cares about - the solution - that's understandable, too. The thirteen individuals credited as "Producer" for this movie (nine of which are "Executive Producers") might be an indication of what went wrong here. See: "Too Many Cooks" cliche. Glenn Close, Christiana Hendricks, Gillian Anderson and Terence Stamp are all predictably good at what they do - and Julian Fellowes' adaptation does Christie's original story justice - which makes me wonder why the director didn't just trust these artists to carry the film and not muck it up with clunky camera and editing work. Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times Irons more than holds his own at the center of this swirling mystery, and Martini proves an enchanting leading lady, but the real draws are Close and Anderson, who bring a ferocious zest to their over-the-top characters. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Sheri Linden Hollywood Reporter A visual treat but a less-than-tantalizing mystery. Dec 23, 2017 Full Review Vikram Murthi RogerEbert.com Crooked House feels as lifeless as the corpse at its center. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 22, 2017 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation The film has just enough glossy period detail, just enough intrigues, deaths or near-deaths and twists to pass for Christie and keep us interested Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 16, 2021 Full Review John Tones Espinof Thanks to a dark humor, and extraordinary performances, 'Crooked house' manages to escape from tropes and common places. [Full Review in Spanish] Jul 23, 2019 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row It's certainly a deliciously dark tale, but it never really gives into its sordid, over-the-top tendencies until it's too late.
