Jacob B I thought this short was straightforward but good. The animation isn't great. There are some really nice backgrounds and I'm sure the crew were doing their best with whatever budget they had to work with but it does have a bit of a made-for-TV look that makes it feel jarring to learn that this was directed by a prominent staff member of DreamWorks Animation. The characters are likeable but not memorable with a cast who do a good job with the voice acting but do feel like they were cast more for their name recognition. However, what makes Crow: The Legend good? Its compelling interpretation of a Native American legend that, on the surface, seems like an origin story for the titular bird's plumage but, once you look deeper, deals with sacrifice and self-acceptance. Not quite Pixar-quality storytelling but still executes these themes pretty darn well. Not bad for a director known for a trilogy of zoo animals engaging in Looney Tunes-style shenanigans in their quest to get back to New York.
