Noel Murray Los Angeles Times This film is utterly absorbing, pulling viewers into a world that seems permanently overcast - as gray and discolored as a busted lip. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It's old school indie, but in our era of frenetic editing it feels fresh and new. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com Michael Rowe and Matt Wells give standout performances as cousins who live two separate types of lives. A gritty and entertaining movie about the mean streets of Canada. Rated: 7/10 Jul 26, 2019 Full Review Carissa Pavlica TV Fanatic It's a commendable directorial debut for Andrew Rowe who allows the camera and his actors' presence to do a lot of the work. It could have easily been overdone, but his deft writing and directing did a powerful story justice. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto While you can pretty much tell where Crown And Anchor is going from the first scenes, it plays out with power and purpose. Rated: 3/5 Oct 5, 2018 Full Review Matthew Roe Film Threat Even with its nagging, lumbering elements, Crown and Anchor succeeds in taking a hard look on the how our childhoods turn us into the misfit adults we are, and not to find answers, but to simply (and starkly) observe the effects. Audience Member Exceeds expectations! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I have to admit, for a directorial debut Andrew Rowe sure meets his calling heading. "Crown And Anchor" rests somewhere between "Training Day" and "In Bruges". The attitude and pace of the film is more classic British thriller, but the incorporating of a dark and dingy cop in crisis hits more to the film styles this side of the pond. Appreciate considering the film is based from the point-of-view of a New Foundland native. The story stays really traditional with familiar tropes, recognizable characters and mixed with steeley, tense angst. Even though the originality suffers a bit, the characters and situational drama is captivating and at times rife with dark humor. The acting is stellar and the build to a moment when these two tragic characters clash is compelling. The suspense and intensity starts almost immediately in "Crown And Anchor". It gets stated in the beginning that some things have happened, we enter in the midst of the worsening chaos and things are only gonna get worse. Moments of botched criminal activity, interactions with unsavory characters, and a bit of blood and bandages bring in the thriller elements. The film could have easily been edited down about 20 minutes and still killed it, but overall "Crown And Anchor" is worth the watch.
