Pre-revolutionary Cuba is the setting for this drama about British mercenary Robert Dapes (Sean Connery), who is sent to Havana in the last days of the Batista regime to train government troops. In addition to a growing sympathy for Castro's rebels and a sense that he is too late to help Batista's disintegrating army, Dapes rekindles a romance with his former lover, Alexandra (Brooke Adams), who is now married to Juan Pulido (Chris Sarandon), a callous plantation owner.

Blu B Better than I expected it to be especially in the second half but it's not "Good". The cinematography isn't bad. The locations are memorable, the direction is a bit hit or miss sometimes. It can look inspired or very boring at times. It wants to epic in certain scenes but it feels instead very empty and lifeless sometimes instead with no life at times. The action scenes are pretty good actually in this when they happen especially the tank which was cool at the end. The music kind of works but just doesn't meld well together. The pacing is half decent too. This starts out very sluggish in the first half but as it goes along it starts to find its rhythm. What helps this compared to other movies that try to tie drama/romance into the fall of a government is this one has significantly more action in it than others do. It helps keep a sense of urgency that others lack. The weakest parts though are the ediitng and pacting which are just ok. This never is able to tie all the different storylines together really. It feels like stuff just happens especially in the first half. Once it starts focusing more on Connery though in the second half it does get signifcantly better. The two leads romance also is just ok and nothing special. This needed to stay focused on Connery and tie his romance with the war better and get rid of the other stuff with Elliot, Balsam, and what not. If your a die hard Connery fan than consider checking this out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Stephen C Vastly underated film from one of my favourite directors Richard Lester. Obviously it's a touch Casablanca but it's packed with great performances and Lester's knack for comedy even in the blackest of situations Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review delysid d could this be any more boring? i prefer zardoz Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/20/18 Full Review Audience Member reminded me of robert redford's 'havana' Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I can't believe Sean Connery starred in a B Movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Director Richard Lester summed this film up nicely, calling it "A political film within which no one speaks about politics and a love story in which no one speaks about love." There are hints of Casablanca, with Sean Connery as a mercenary hired by the Batista Regime in 1959 to train soldiers. He then comes across old flame Brooke Adams, all the while the Cuba Revolution is fomenting. It's a film that wasn't received well at it's time by critics and also wasn't received well by either Castro or Batista supporters, which probably means they got it right. Besides Connery and Adams (who always seemed interchangeable to me with Karen Allen and Jessica Harper) is a strong cast that includes Jack Weston, Chris Sarandon, Hector Elizondo, Denholm Elliott, Martin Balsam and David Rappaport. Written by frequent Lester collaborator Charles Wood it's a smart script that avoids cliches and works quite well. It's not a prefect film, but in some ways it struck me as something of a flawed masterpiece. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
