Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times Directors Mark Blane and Ben Mankoff bring a kinky sweetness to this oddball dramedy, but audience's appetites for it will depend on their patience with its lead character. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Whatever charms the filmmakers envisioned are nowhere apparent in these 83 cringe-worthy minutes. Oct 31, 2019 Full Review Rubén Rosario MiamiArtZine If you want to buck the trends and seek out a comedy that feels fresh and vibrant, look no further than this endearing first feature from star/screenwriter/co-director Mark Blane. Jul 20, 2020 Full Review Norman Gidney Film Threat ...this is not to say that Cubby is a bad film. It is quite a frothy mix of childish innocence and magical realism. It's just nothing of major consequence. Rated: 6/10 Nov 11, 2019 Full Review Andrew Stover Film Inquiry Cubby is still vaguely enjoyable and endearingly weird, but it's still grades away from testing out of ordinariness. Oct 24, 2019 Full Review Terry Mesnard Gayly Dreadful I personally enjoyed [Cubby] and the off-center oddity of NYC as filtered through an overly imaginative manchild with a penchant for Klonopin and psychedelic cupcakes. Audience Member Possibly not for everyone one, but PERFECT for some, including me. Give in to the vibe and flow and you'll be richly rewarded. The animation is really lovely, as is the music, and the kid totally lights up the screen. NYC looks great on 16mm too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member This is one of those films that is so unexpected and delightfully quirky and unique. It harkens back to indie comedies of the 90s with its visual style, all shot on film. I loved going on a journey down the rabbit hole with Cubby. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Incredibly special film!! A beautiful story of a person caught between childhood and adulthood, navigating naivete and desire with comedic brilliance. I love the unique and specific tone of this movie and look forward to whatever Mark Blane does next! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it. If you haven't seen it, you should! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member CUBBY is kaleidoscopic and engrossing—a story for underdogs, those of us who are told again and again to just act like the others. Between the textured 16mm film, the superb ensemble acting, and achingly earnest shifts between comedy and drama, fantasy and reality, writer-producer-director-star Blane offers tenderness as a salve. A must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Insightful, sensitive peek at the evolution of a creative, well-meaning soul's search for himself in a confusing, critical world. When leaving a theatre caring for the characters as family, then I consider it a good movie. Well done! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
