Audience Member one side of Asian culture, important but less recognized. the embarrassment of hybrid people. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm giving this movie a 3 star rating because as a Singapore-German collaboration, it is not that bad. The movie was shot entirely in Singapore and some of the backdrops were quite nicely done. The storyline is also not that far away from the truth of what was happening in "those days" and it still does happen, in some families and cultures in Asia. Of the two leading actresses, Maggie Q raised a better performance, whilst Fann was depicted in a very stereotypical role which she is usually good at anyway. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member All what happens in the film might be seen as fiction and it happened in the early 30's, but in real life it still happens. Jeopardising a certain "social" status & acceptance for the real love. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member it was a slow moving story or rather not really, but it was okay... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member again...one of his job Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Ah yes. This is the film version of a Catherine Lim novel - full of pseudo-angst, and filled to the brim with racial self-loathing and a neo-colonial mentality. Dressed up as a story of empowerment, this is nothing more than a sickeningly sweet story of emotional manipulation and dependency. Stars a simpering Fann Wong who carefully strains to imbue her character with guileless innocence. Maggie Q does a lot better, but the guy who plays her lover is so awful I'm not even going to bother looking up his name. Overall, the acting is more befitting of a Channel 8 production. Expect the tedious swill of melodramatic orchesteral music set to quite lush, but unimaginative cinematography. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
