Nick M 12/07/2024 The idea around which the film was constructed is that a man throws a hissy fit and rejects society because it will not let him live out his own particular ideals (abandoning his love and his child in order to do so), and swears that he will not come down from the mountains until a statue of the Madonna begins to walk. The premise is the best thing about this picture - it's just dreadful. Approximately 30% of it is missing, but I consider that a mercy. Fritz Lang attempts to make the main character, Irmgard (or Ermagerd, as I think of her), a sympathetic one in a variety of ways, but only succeeds in making her pathetic. At one point she is trapped with her husband in a shed after a rock slide, and as they're being rescued she becomes utter dead weight that they have to try to figure out how to haul out of there. I wish they'd have left her. The motivations of the main players are contrived and tedious, and the character John is utterly ridiculous. Why did he turn into a monster? For the same reason that Ermagerd ended up yanking a baby out of its grandmother's arms - who cares?! Just no. See more Read all reviews
