Cath Clarke Guardian There are echoes of the Turpin case and Josef Fritzl’s basement in this tense arthouse horror shot in grainy 16mm with auteurish confidence by first-time film-maker Corey Deshon. Rated: 3/5 Feb 13, 2023 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com While this drama within the drama recalls “Dogtooth,” an acknowledged influence, nothing else about “Daughter” feels so distinctive. Rated: 2/4 Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The symbolism remains heavy, but it’s all in service of a powerful prisoner’s story, about the small ways people find freedom. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting The concept may come across as too simple, but the execution is nothing short of complex and perceptive. Rated: 4/5 Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Andy Klein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's depressing quite frankly, but it moves quickly, it's short, and there's a cleverness to the concept. Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Peter Gray The AU Review The film’s dark, grainy aesthetic further speaks to Deshon’s comfort in expressing his horror temperament, revelling in a nature that’s more psychological than visually brutal. Sep Z Good acting and concepts but the movie did not give nearly enough information to actually understand what was going on. Leaves you wanting an explanation, overall waste of time. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Danton M Not impressed, not at all. For only 95 minutes, the movie seems twice as long. Too many scenes apparently trying to create tension only created restlessness and boredom in me. How many times do we need the camera to move slowly from room to empty room? How often do we need a lingering look at Daughter's face? And too many unanswered questions (Spoilers!) What's the purpose of taking Son's blood? What is up with the crazy scene the "children" act out? We have no inkling of the sort of performance they will do, then WHAM! it's psychedelic time! As for the ending, apparently the writer couldn't come up with a satisfactory one, thus the faux-mysterious, "thought-provoking" conclusion that leaves a viewer wondering "What the hell?" when The End appears onscreen. Speaking of time, don't waste yours on this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/26/23 Full Review Daniel G Not bad, just exactly like Dogstooth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Mark T This movie was outstanding. It's not really horror, and not really trying to scare you, but it's creepy and atmospheric, and really tense throughout. It makes you think about the state of the world, the way people force their beliefs on others, and how dangerous that can be when we're all forced to coexist. Love the old school cinematography, it makes it look like it was shot in the 70s. If you like slow burn movies that make you think, or more artsy stuff, definite check this out. You won't be disappointed! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/23 Full Review Leonard E Tense situations but thats it. Dumb ending. Not really scary, not really horror more like thriller but slow burn. No likable characters, the main character just acts like an idiot with no brain. Ultimately movie sucks but better than most horror movie out there. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/23 Full Review DJ F This is what a proper horror movie looks like! Also sounds like, and FEELS like something is off. Those disturbing psycho-thrillers are the best kind of horror movies because they play on our actual fears. It's not a guy in a hockey mask killing mischievous teens, or ghosts, or zombies but our own inner craziness going left that makes these kind of stories so strong and scary. "Daughter" takes our insecurities and ramps them up with a look at what we attempt to control, how out of control we really are or can be, and an Imaginative way to look at what we think is the way things should be and what happens when that thinking is not in tune with reality. This isn't just a horrible premise but stronger because this kind of portrait reminds me of things I have seen in the world-and how horrible it can be sometimes. It is always easier to also watch these slow burn stories when the tension builds on one's own fears of being alone, not fitting in socially, the pressures of family and life at home, cultural standards questioned and more. All things that we have real concern about. This story pushes the edges of the world it exists in and turns it slowly on its head. Kind of like watching an accident happen in slow motion: you know terrible things are happening and all you can do is watch it unfold. Slowly. In a world where everyday life is taken for granted, this movie takes its time removing our comfort with certain ideas and allows us to live with what is off about our world. It says to its audience "you know this is out of focus. And you are still going to watch. What are you willing to do about it?!" Highly recommended!
