Audience Member Added to my short review here is a review by another viewer who goes into more detail of why this film could of been much better. But basically you have a pair of siblings who are meeting their father and step mother at their cabin in the woods. Soon after their arrival the family dog is injured by something and has to be put down. Not long after a stranger shows up covered in bruises and blood and talks of something dangerous being in the woods. The tension, character development, and set up are great in this flick but there is only one problem. No payoff. While im not new to having movies without any real explanation (especially in horror) happen and leave me frustrated its even more disturbing when i think the movie had a chance to be a sleeper and great flick. The actors/actresses do a fabulous job in this but again by the time you are ready for the payoff it just never appears. The only explanation i can really give is that maybe the forest was haunted and that explains why people start losing their shit. Never the less, this is free on youtube to watch if you would like. Its one of those things where i recommend it but yet at the same time you will most likely be disappointed as well. http://anythinghorror.com/2011/06/03...-dawning-2009/ My Rating: 5/10 Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Dawning (Gregg Holtgrewe, 2009) An attempt at a home-invasion thriller with a possibly-supernatural bent that fails on both counts. Calling it slow would imply that it had a pace at all. The characters are shallow, which actually makes them a pretty good fit for the actors. But the real failing here is the plot, which meanders like a naked mole rat on acid before finally deciding, far too late, where it wants to go (not that it ever gets there). This is one you can safely avoid. * Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this movie tonight as a Netflix recommendation based upon the fact that I watch a lot of horror movies. I couldn't have been more disappointed. It starts out with a very cold family reunion with the new step mother making snarky remarks to the dad as the young adult brother and sister team arrive at the father's cabin in the woods for a getaway with the fam. The filming all of the sudden becomes grainy like a 70's horror film. The sound is poorly done. You can hear every single movement in the room. Even just the fibers of the characters' pants rubbing together as they move through the room. They also employed the work score known to man. The music is way over dramatic and not suspenseful. If someone goes to the fridge to get some milk, the music nearly dues a resounding "DUN DUN DUN!" It is almost comical if it weren't so annoying. The chemistry between the actors is odd and awkward. I don't know whether to laugh or be afraid at times because I can't tell the emotion that the actors are trying to convey. It is so low budget that there is barely any money for makeup or even fake blood. Every time there is an injury of some time, the camera cuts away so that call you can hear is a sound effect and then it cuts back to show the after effects of what happened, but no special effects of makeup necessary. There are no parts that are jumpy or thrilling. In fact, the characters talk so much about the plot of the move that there isn't even a psychological thrill ride. If the characters would have talked less, it would have given the audience the chance to think during the movie rather than be bored to death. Instead the audience is treated as if it is stupid and every move or thought in the movie is then explained by one of the characters as if we didn't get it. I HATED THIS MOVIE!!!!!
