In this TV adaptation of a Thomas Hardy story, Edith (Hannah Gordon) is stuck in a loveless marriage to a brewery owner. Looking to fill the void in her life, she begins meddling in the romantic affairs of her pregnant -- and quite lonely -- maid, Anna May (Sammi Davis). Since Anna May is illiterate, Edith helps her write love letters to Charles (Martyn Stanbridge), a London businessman she met by chance at a carnival. Charles falls in love, unaware that he's communicating with Edith.
