When theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer became director of the Manhattan Project, he brought with him a love of poetry, philosophy and Eastern religion. In the years following Trinity, the classified maiden test of a prototype atomic bomb, Oppenheimer revealed himself as a thoughtful man who felt both a duty to his country and a deep regret for the death and destruction caused by his leadership in the development of the weapon that heralded the arrival of the Atomic Age.

Victor O I looked up this documentary days before watching Christopher Nolan's 2023 epic film. On the surface, I only recognized a few people from history and didn't think it was worth my time. But then I saw Oppenheimer and I raced to watch this movie afterwards which has gotten quite the push. Pulled from file-sharing sites and straight to the members-only streaming sites, in 480p quality of course. J. Robert Oppenheimer in the 1940s was put in charge of the Manhattan Engineering District Project, the first atomic bomb. He and the people working on the project succeeded, as the story of the man and his life is told here by the men who knew him personally and professionally. Born of a self-made man who raised his sons with all he could provide, Oppenheimer grew with a thirst for knowledge in the field of physics, a field which became saturated with many great minds who made leaps and bounds in a field that grew to become the most important science of the world. With the political situation in Europe bringing fears of another global conflict, the request was made to the US President Roosevelt to use the great physicists to create the atomic bomb before the Nazis. The work, as well as the conflicts, are told before the success of the Trinity test and afterward the controversies in how the US should direct nuclear research. Oppenheimer originally praised but eventually was shunned from advising the US atomic energy policy ever again. If I had seen this movie before Nolan's I wouldn't have been as eager, but seeing the characters in the movie played here by the real people from Isidor Rabi, Frank Oppenheimer, Robert Wilson, and Haakon Chevalier had me bursting at the recognition as well as the archival footage of Leslie Groves and J. Robert Oppenheimer. A good documentary, worthy of its Oscar nomination. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Gage Y Absolutely spectacular, haunting, and insightful. Still the most personal and up close look into the life of one of the most complex and gentle men to ever live. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Can't wait for Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', so decided to see this docu. Quiet old but the story itself is pretty amazing. No wonder Nolan picked this story. Guess even without an advance in Germany with the allied troops, this is where the Nazis lost. Innovation is key! Glad Hitler and the Nazis didn't invest much in it. Got me curious how Nolan will use this powerful story of the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer to his weird but entertaining storytelling. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Informative and educational regarding Los Alamos and the men and women responsible for the development of the first atomic weapon, the documentary is even more adept at illustrating how drastically a man can be changed by his pursuits. J. Robert Oppenheimer was, by all accounts, a truly brilliant man. Driven by his natural aptitude for physics and a belief that the greater good would be served by a weapon that would end the war in Europe and the Pacific, Oppenheimer realized only too late that what he was in fact creating could effectively bring about the destruction of man. There is a visible transformation in the man, from someone in love with the wonder of discovery and the satisfaction of achievement to a man distraught at what his creation is capable of and how the irreparable change it had caused. The Day After Trinity is a fascinating look at these men and women who knew Oppenheimer and who worked with him toward this endeavor, the atomic bomb, and how they and the world were forever changed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member awesome doc!!!!! man, you really start to care for oppenheimer - almost pity him, despite his charisma. what a great doc - with great interveiws and quotes from oppenheimer himself. the footage from los alamos is incredible - and the factual database about nuclear physics is astounding. i watched it twice and still did not absorb the impact of the film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer who headed up the Manhattan Project. Fascinating story of the atomic age and how members of the project felt about the use of atomic weapons. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
