05/04/2020 Wasn't sure what I was getting into here , but ...The sordid history of the Spanish Inquisition , and the gorgeous production values (Medieval Spain) , plus the mystery of what was truly behind all the stunning cruelty in this particular film kept me going until the end....Perhaps not quite as stomach-churning as "The Devils" (of Loudun the Oliver Reed film) but (except for the extravagant settings) pretty close in it's feelings ...To those who had to live and die in that Spanish time period, Spain was truly as horrible a Holocaust as the later Third Reich years in Nazi Germany....Whether it's thousands or millions of victims, the individual agony of being tortured to death remains the same.... Some of the characters, including Lambert's, act like buffoons, just about every scene is on a sound stage, and historical accuracy is nil, but the mystery itself isn't too bad. However if you want to see a first class movie of this genre, watch The Name of the Rose, or a PBS episode of Cadfael. See more 12/30/2012 Not great, but not bad. I would say it's an interesting take on why the separation of church and state is so important.
