I feel like they could have done a lot more with the unusual concept if they had spent more time artistically exploring a world where vampires were the norm, instead of humans. Like most vampire fans, I would have liked to see more of their delicious yet hedonistic lifestyle. Would have been better as beautiful film noir - instead, it's a slow action movie with gore. Decent performances by big actors. Too many "Why did they DO THAT?!" moments. Not a complete waste of time, tho. Rated 2.5/5 Stars •  Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Audience Member The Spierig Brothers here is their second directorial feature This is a rarity for them to actually succeed Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neil The story takes place in the distant future 10 years; humans are all but wiped out from existence and vampires have declared much of the world their own as the dominant species They establish order, workforces, while also harvesting blood to sustain themselves from humans like cattle A pharmaceutical lab called Bromley Marks has their head hematologist Edward heading everything He’s actually the only one of his kind that refuses to drink human blood, his brother wants him to be 100% vampire but Edward works the science not the military that rounds up humans But the blood supply is running low and without fresh sustenance all the vampires will mutate and become savage creatures or permanently dead Edward is then taken hostage by a group of human rebels hoping to rebuild while also finding a potential cure I’m happy to say this is one of the smarter vampire flicks even after 15 years it didnt feel exploited or contrived I like the fact that the directors had vampires into mainstream society and treating the natural resource of blood as a great allegory for us it is scary when you think about it: what happens if there's nothing left? It’s also a hard look at corporations/capitalism willing to pay any amount to keep their supplies in check next to the privileged class I also didn’t catch the baptism metaphor the first time around but it makes sense given what happens halfway through the movie has great gore, creature effects, an original story, and fun action scenes Even Neil’s character is interesting and is given a bit of depth There’s even one point where it’s get pretty intense you’re like wow that is really harsh….this is actually getting you emotionally invested This is a good movie for a change considering it came out in January and a perfect mix of sci-fi, horror, and drama as well as social commentary telling us all the wealth and power won’t matter if we continue to squander out planet’s precious resources Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Bryan J Very clever and interesting concept about a vampire takeover and the societal issues that would arise from such a circumstance. The notion of what happens when vampires cease to drink blood was also quite creative as it presents as a big threat in the universe, hence why the lack of blood supply is such a significant problem and could be analogous as a statement of the world's environmental/supply issues. The character's relationship arc between the protagonist and his brother could've been fleshed out a little better and the hope that is felt in the conclusion gives for a great sensation by the end.
